Janet frequently roams the back country exploring canyons, mountains, forests, deserts, and seashores. These wilderness experiences provide Janet with an insight into the creativity and complexity of nature which, in turn, provides an endless source of ideas for her paintings. Her obsession to explore coupled with her passion to create is likened to devoted naturalists like Muir, Thoreau, and Leopold.
ABOUT THE ARTIST ...
Since early, childhood Janet Tarjan Erl has had a strong affinity for painting and the outdoors. Having been raised in the town of Auburn, California, a Sierra Nevada foothill community, Janet spent much time as a youngster hiking and exploring the surrounding countryside. The neighboring rivers and canyons especially impressed her, and while still in her teens she began her first series of drawings and paintings of the neighboring American River. She began her art education while attending Sierra College and continued her formal training at the University of California, Davis where she studied under Wayne Thiebaud, Robert Arneson and other accomplished artists.
While attending U. C. Davis, Janet began freelancing as an illustrator for computer game companies. She created cover art for several notable companies, namely 20th Century Fox and Sirius Software. She continued to do game cover art and expanded her list of clientele to include nature and science museums who commissioned her for exhibit artwork. She also did a variety of other projects such as patent drawings, logos, and posters.
After illustrating for several years, Janet decided to pursue her fine art career and began painting landscape scenics on location. She later incorporated wildlife into her landscape paintings - much as she would see them - from afar. Today most of her work is painted in the studio.
Whatever the subject, Janet's artwork is reflective of her awe and admiration of nature - a subject matter she is fascinated with. Whether it is landscape or wildlife, her work reveals her fascination with objects or scenes that have natural abstract shape or form that lend themselves to strong linear shapes or designs. The wide variation in moods of Janet's work reflect the variety of natural moods inherent in nature. While some of her paintings may be peaceful and relaxing, others may be twisted and contorted - all are aspects of nature's ceaseless creativity.
OTHER RELATED ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Janet is co-owner of Trekker Designs, a garment apparel decorating company which she illustrates for. Her illustrations have won the company international apparel decorating awards.
Janet is also a published writer and has authored articles for magazines and newsletters. In addition, she created and edited the Peak and Gorge Boulder a mountain climbing and gorge scrambling newsletter.
She is also an avid outdoor enthusiast. Her daily outings and adventures include hiking, mountain biking, cross country skiing, snowshoeing, and telemark skiing. She spends her weekends and vacations doing more long range activities such as backpacking, mountain climbing, canyoneering, and bicycle touring. She has toured via a bicycle from Vancouver Canada to Auburn California and from Auburn to the Northern California coast and back.
