Landscape Art

by Janet Tarjan Erl

Landscape art has been the one genre I have done the longest.  I started painting them when I was twelve years old.  I remember my early landscapes were painted from pictures in instructional art books and pictures from magazines.  I later progressed to painting on location.

Over the years I did a lot of plein air (on location ) paintings.  My biggest body of plein air work was done during the eighties, just before I got interested in painting wildlife.  In fact, my plein air work is what inspired me to do wildlife art because I saw so much of them while I did my paintings that I started to incorporate them as I saw them – usually from afar.   Before long I began to photograph wildlife, and with good photos at hand, I started painting them as subjects unto themselves, especially during winter months when it was too uncomfortable to paint on location.  My wildlife art became very popular, and soon it was the dominant genre I painted.

Though I’ve done a lot of animal art, the landscape is where I found my most joy.  I often created animal art that had a landscape element to it, and sometimes I created landscapes with distant wildlife in them called ‘wildlife landscapes’.  Either way, it was important for me to incorporate landscapes whether they were the focal point or the backdrop of a painting.

Though I spent many years painting animals, I seem to have come full circle and find I’m now painting mostly landscapes or wildlife landscapes.  I’m also painting on location again, and I love it.  It’s so inspiring to watch the land change slowly as the sun arcs across the sky and to watch the wildlife carry on with their daily lives.
