By Janet Tarjan Erl It might seem peculiar that being such a dedicated wildlife and nature artist that I paint horses and western subjects. Most artists stick with one genre, but not me. I find these subjects fascinating. As for horses, I think they are one of the most beautiful animals on this planet, and just because they are domesticated doesn’t deter me from painting them in landscapes that compliment their beauty. As for ranchers and cowboys, I think they are a dying breed worthy of representation, and I feel fortunate to capture some of contemporary lifestyles of these hard working people. I’ve also tried painting historic Native American culture, but I found it difficult to really get a feel for this type of art since I never had the opportunity to experience it first hand. Horses and ranchers, on the other hand, I have seen and interacted with most of my life, so I have emotions and memories of these animals and people to inspire my paintings of them. Most of my equine and contemporary ranch art was inspired by the ranchers, cowboys, and horses of Siskiyou County, California where I lived for nearly fourteen years. So, in a sense, this body of work is dedicated to them.
